         1. COMPUTER PROGRAMMING

 

Began learning to program in High School in 1965.   

 

Worked as a computer programmer on a project to teach Calculus by computerized instruction.  Modules were written to provide computerized instruction through a question and answer approach.  The structure was similar to today’s modern “Help” tutorials used commonly in Personal Computer software.

Using BAL (Basic Assembly Language) on a mainframe computer, worked on commercial applications dealing with the manipulation and usage of list rental files.  Managed a project to develop a series of statistical reports for the Evelyn Wood Speed Reading Schools.

Incorporated the use of personal computers into professional and personal life continuously since 1983.

 

Worked on a customized database program for a small gas, oil and furnace business. (1996-97)

          2. OPERATIONS RESEARCH

 

Participated in the design of a computer simulation model of a large-scale dental facility for the purpose of evaluating the feasibility of national or local Dental Health Maintenance Organizations.

Participated in a study of the relationships between the configuration and intensity of various land-use activities to the generated energy requirements of the region in order to assess the impact of different forms of land development on a region's overall energy needs for the purpose of optimal energy utilization.

        3. APPLIED STATISTICS

 

During post-graduate doctoral studies in Applied Mathematics, worked on a model of fuel consumption of vehicles on highways and freeways based on microscopic car-following models in order to assess the impact of alternative traffic control models, which affected the flow patterns of traffic, on the overall fleet consumption of petroleum products.

 

During the summer of 1977, designed and performed a study of first year law students at the University of West Los Angeles School of Law using regression techniques.  The purpose was to relate academic performance to a detailed analysis of study materials, methods, and habits.

 

Acted as a consultant in Statistics for a Ph.D. candidate in Clinical Psychology in 1991 and 1992.  

 

          4. BUSINESS MANAGEMENT/COMPUTER OPERATIONS

 

Updated a practice in Clinical Psychology from a manual system to a computerized system, including financial management, client data entry, time-keeping, billing and collections systems. (1996 - 1997)  

 

Extended the billing system to electronic billing. (2001)

          5. TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS ANALYSIS

 

Principal author of a State of the Art Assessment of Electric and Hybrid Vehicles in Use throughout the World, a report prepared for Congress.  Developed the data requirements and collection methodology, and extensively traveled in France, Germany and the Great Britain in fulfillment of this task.  Information was collected from vehicle manufacturers, operators, and government officials.  Managed the statistical analysis efforts, as well as report organization, editing, and publication.  Designed the cover art.

 

Project manager of a study for the Urban Mass Transit Administration regarding Automated Fare Collection equipment and methods for the purpose of assessing alternative systems approaches as well as the costs and reliability associated with existing systems in use.

          6. THE PRACTICE OF LAW  

 

Admitted to practice in California, as well as United States Federal Courts of the Northern, Eastern and Central Districts of California

 

1980 to 1983 – Associate, Law Offices of David M. Hollingsworth, Monterey, California.

 

Litigation practice, handling all aspects of a variety of civil cases, including real estate, business disputes, contracts, foreclosure, unlawful detainer, mechanics' liens, negligence, nuisance, dissolution of marriage, dissolution of partnerships, bankruptcy, probate, conservatorship, and estate planning.  An enjoyable highlight was in December, 1982, when the firm obtained a jury verdict of over $550,000 on behalf of 41 clients who lived in a subdivision adjacent to a Sewage Treatment Plant.  I was responsible for trial preparation and I applied knowledge of mathematics and statistics to cross-examine expert witnesses during trial concerning models used by the United States Environmental Protection Agency relating to drift of odors.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

 

1970-1975.  Teaching Assistant at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, teaching such classes as Differential and Integral Calculus.  Classes were comprised primarily of Mathematics and Science majors in the undergraduate University program.

 

During that same time, taught a course in Finite Mathematics to undergraduate students as an adjunct faculty member of the Suffolk County Community College in Selden, New York.

 

1971-1972.   Mathematics teacher in a private high school, teaching Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, Geometry and Calculus.

 

1975-1977.  Part-time Instructor in the Los Angeles Community College District (teaching at Santa Monica City College, Los Angeles City College and East Los Angeles City College), teaching Algebra, Trigonometry, Intermediate Algebra, Analytic Geometry, and Integral Calculus.

 

1976-1978.  Part-time Lecturer at California State University, Northridge, teaching Trigonometry, Algebra, Calculus, and Matrix Algebra.

 

1983-1990.  Part-time Lecturer at Monterey Peninsula College, Monterey, California, (certain years) teaching Trigonometry, Algebra, Differential Calculus, Legal Aspects of Real Estate, and Statistics.  

 

CIVIC AND VOLUNTEER WORK

 

Carmel Valley Angel Project - Legal counsel (pro bono).  Formed and act as counsel for a charitable corporation that provides food, clothing and essential items to families in need in Carmel Valley during the Christmas holiday season each year.  Counsel (2001 to present)

 

Carmel Valley Village Improvement Committee - General support activities (1980's to present).  Director (2005-2006)

 

Carmel Valley Community Youth Center - - Originated, produced and coordinated “Hoofer’s Nightclub”, a temporary dancehall inside the Carmel Valley community center, as a way of providing more social activities for Carmel Valley Village. (1995)

 

Friends of the Carmel Valley Library - Originated, produced and coordinated “A Night at the Old Buckeye”, an annual fund-raiser for the Carmel Valley Library, (1995 - 1999).  This fund-raiser helped to keep the doors of the library open one extra day a week and produced capital funds to help with the expansion of the library.  Assisted in By-Laws revision and general support activities (2004).  Director (2005-present).  Established a School Scrabble Club.  Organized, produced and coordinated a qualifying Scrabble Tournament and sent the 2 winning students to the National School Scrabble Championship in Boston, where they took 31st place out of 98 teams. (2006)

      

 

Carmel Valley Chamber of Commerce - Director.  Participated in various activities, including the revision of the By-Laws.  (1995-96)

 

Carmel-By-The-Sea Rotary Club - Membership Development Chairman (1994-95), Program Chairman (1995-96), Club Secretary (1996-1998), Paul Harris Fellow (1996 and 1999)

 

Carmel Rotary Blues Band - Keyboardist and secretary.  The band, comprised of members of the Carmel-by-the-Sea Rotary Club, rehearsed once a week, performed for a fee and established a scholarship fund.  Donations were made to various worthy organizations and individuals, such as music programs in the local schools.  Primarily through the band's and the Club's efforts, a recording studio was created in the Carmel Youth Center for local youth to train, rehearse and record. (1994 to 1998)

 

 

Carmel Rotary Soul and Blues Revue” - Organized, produced and coordinated an annual fund-raiser for the Carmel Rotary Club, the purpose of which was to raise money for youth music programs in the local community.  Chairperson and Board Member (1997-98)   Board Member in charge of legal affairs (1999)

 

Red Cross, Carmel Chapter - Instructor in the area of HIV/AIDS education.  Trained other speakers on the Speakers' Bureau and gave talks to social and civic groups on the subject.  Originated the concept of “B.A.R.” (Basic AIDS Review), which involved taking groups of Red Cross speakers into local bars to spread accurate and up-to-date information about the problem of HIV and AIDS in the community. (1987-89)

 

The Jewish Food and Crafts Festival, Carmel, California - Director of Transportation and Traffic Control (People Movement) (1987 to 1998).  Traffic Control Volunteer (1999 to 2003).  Director of Transportation and Traffic Control (People Movement) (2005 to present)

 

Old Monterey Business Association - Director.  Worked on various activities, including a statistical analysis and preparation of graphs and a report regarding a survey of pedestrian activity in the Downtown area of Monterey, California.  (1994 and 1995)

 

Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance – Volunteer coordinator for the Club d’Elegance tent.  Helped with the programming of the event’s database.  (1998 - 2000)   Hospitality staff (2001)

 

RECREATION AND HOBBIES

 

Grooming - Good therapy for both of us and a great bonding experience.

 

 

 

 

Motorcycling – I've been riding motorcycles since the 60’s.  Since 1991, I have traveled over 70,000 miles touring this great land on a 1991 Harley Davidson Electra Glide.
